Many running races have been cancelled or moved to a virtual platform because of the pandemic, a situation that has caused the running events industry to take a big hit.

It was only a matter of time before one of the most beloved traditions in the running world was affected, too—the turkey trot.

Each Thanksgiving morning, folks across the country typically don their thermal leggings and plush drumstick headbands to get in a sweat before they attack their holiday meal. It’s estimated that more than 20,000 folks ran 2019 turkey trots in the DC area alone. But running a race is difficult to do safely in the era of social distancing, and it seems turkey trots may be another casualty of 2020.

SOME’s annual Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger 5K, which is one of the most popular trots in the region and the only DC-based one, announced it will be held virtually this year. While thousands of runners usually meet at Freedom Plaza for multiple races, live entertainment, and games, this year, folks will run the race on their own.

Participants will register via the platform RunSignUp to track their course and time and compete for prizes. Independent registration for the virtual race ranges from $15 to $45, and you can also join or create a virtual team with a fundraising goal. All money raised by the race goes toward SOME’s mission, which is to provide housing, healthcare, and food to those struggling financially or experiencing homelessness in the Washington area.

Americas Turkey Trot: Americas Favorite Thanksgiving Race

Americas Turkey Trot Run Is The Best Virtual Turkey Trot 2020.

The trotters have a flair for costumed fun, are usually on the road for charity and sometimes hand out turkey pies to the first place winners. The race is in the morning so Trott can have a guilty pleasure - free from gobbling it up later.

The runners all over the country agree that a few kilometers is a good start to the holidays. Unfortunately, there are no turkey trotting marathons at the moment, but if you love pumpkin pie, you can easily choose your own race. Choose from a crowd-fit race like the Dania Point Turkey Trot or one of the more popular ones like the Houston Turkey Trot or the Chicago Marathon.

Thousands of runners appear in costume and the course is lined with spectators, so you can complete both races in less than an hour with just a few hours sleep and a little energy.

This is a great race that supports food banks and has donated over $4 million in its 10-year history. It is a new record for the largest one-day food donation in the history of the race.

If you can’t make it to the race in person, you can run or donate online via the American Turkey Trot Run website or on Facebook.

Fixed weight for the 10K and 5K fun run at White Bear Lake, a 10K race in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a 5K race at the Minnesota State Fair in Duluth.

The trot race is a win - win - win: you burn 10 miles worth of calories, you’re allowed to go to Hawaii, and there are no races on the calendar. The longest-running race in the US, the American TurkeyTrot, celebrates its 120th birthday in 2015. This year, 14,000 runners will compete in the annual turkey trotter race on November 26 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Tradition is that one runner, Gus Gressel, has run the race nearly 50 times.

Before the start at 9 a.m. there is a costume competition, in which runners of all ability classes participate. Prices don’t go fast, but there is a chance to be the fastest runner with a predicted time in the lead-up and a predicted time in the race. There is no “predicted time” or “lead time,” just a prediction.

If you make it to Turkey Trot Clinic, you have a chance to run the first ten kilometers of the marathon at your target speed.

To inspire your gaggle of friends and family, here is a video of the first annual American Turkey Trot Run, which takes place on Thursday, November 24, 2016. Now is the time to narrow the gap between the two master turkeys, representing Cuero and Worthington, Minn., and settle in two blocks of flats that will be America’s turkey capital of the world, for at least the next 12 months. For more information about the race, a full schedule of events and other information, visit TheVirtualRunChallenge.com

The Dana Point Turkey Trot, founded in 1977, encourages its 11,000 runners to race with their heads full. Since its inception, it has raised $6.9 million for local charities, including the American Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health, as well as local nonprofits.

The race, which will celebrate its 123rd anniversary in 2019, dates back to 1896 and is the longest consecutive foot race in the US and the second longest of its kind in North America. Last year 24,901 people took part and over 14,000 people took part, from competitive athletes to newcomers, racing veterans and veterans, as well as runners from all walks of life.

Participants come from all over America and even across the pond to compete in the historic event, which ends with a live band, refreshments and drinks for adults.

In recent years, the costume competition has become one of the most popular events at the American Turkey Trot Run. Santa Claus is also popular, leading his reindeer team, which he leads, as well as the annual Christmas tree lighting.

The Virtual Turkey Trot its annual American Turkey Trot Run in Lake Placid, New York. During the race, it is tradition to overtake the official mascot, who is dressed as a turkey.

It is a great way to start this wonderful holiday and feel like you are returning to the table for a second. It’s fun when you’re out there and running hard, Dengate says, but it’s also great for body and mind.

When you return home and spend time with friends and family, watching football and feasting on delicious turkeys, fillings, cranberries and more, you will have that extra swing in your stride. On Thursday, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of Americans will take part in one of the most popular holidays in the United States, the Americas Turkey Trot Run on Facebook. Enjoy the fresh air while taking on a physical challenge and connecting with your community through a run or event.
